Although its true that a balanced ventilation system in your attic is important for regulating temperature all year round, it’s vital during the hot summer months, when the sun beats down on the roof and causes the attic to heat up immensely. Poor ventilation can cause to heat and humidity to buildup in the attic and can potentially increase the temperature in your living space below. Excessive heat and moisture can cause premature damage to shingles, wood framing, ceiling, siding, paint, and wallpaper.

Another negative effect of improper ventilation is increased energy consumption while cooling your home.  A hot attic in the summer will cause an increase in your home’s temperature, which will be counter acted by increasing the air conditioning to keep the living space more comfortable.  This increased work load can shorten the life expectancy of your ac unit and cause an increase in summer cooling costs.

Efficient attic ventilation is also important during the winter season, appliances as well as showers, baths, cooking, and laundry can contribute to extra moisture build-up and water vapor in the attic. When an attic is poorly ventilated, this moisture can collect on the underside of the roof.  Excess moisture can also cause damage to the structure of the house and can even attract wood-eating insects like termites.
